“Receiving the Leroy Warden and Associates Scholarship is a profound milestone, a nod to my high school journey and a push into university life. This award has not only highlighted the triumphs and resilience demonstrated throughout my high school journey but has also reinforced the belief I have in my own goals and aspirations.

As I prepare to step onto the University of Alberta campus this fall, the financial relief through the Leroy Warden and Associates Scholarship and the newfound connections through Mr. Warden and the network of past recipients will be an integral part of navigating University life, a new chapter that will undoubtedly require immense drive and determination. Furthermore, the award presents the opportunity to gain mentorship that will be an asset well beyond that in a classroom setting. Mr. Warden and his team reflect the altruistic and community focused principles I aim to uphold in the future.

My advice to future applicants is to try. Having a steadfast belief and confidence while actively pursuing your interests will inevitably lead to positive outcomes. Furthermore, don’t close doors on yourself due to a fear of failure. Throughout your moments of doubt, still try and learn from the outcomes. "As the recipient of the 2025 LeRoy Warden & Associates Scholarship, I am still in disbelief that I would be standing at the crossroads of my lifelong journey with the support of my family and friends, my community, and this award. Words cannot capture the appreciation I feel. I still remember my first time entering highschool with the dream of making an impact and my desire to push my academic potential to its limits through the rigorous Advanced Placement programming. Through overcoming challenges with resilience, I recognize that the growth I’ve had as a leader is only just the beginning. A leader is not made overnight—leadership is a journey that one never finishes. Regardless of when you start this journey, it is never too late to start, and to continue, making an impact within the community. My experience within the Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science, and Technology (WISEST) Summer Research Program (SRP) reflects not only my pursuit of intellectual curiosity and growth, but my wish to become a trailblazer within the science community. From my participation within the program, I strive to mentor and empower other women to succeed within the underrepresented fields of science, breaking down the barriers women face in realizing their own potential. Receiving this award recognizes not only the impact I have had within my community thus far, but a testament to my commitment to continue striving for excellence within my leadership involvement. Leading up to my interview, I remember the moments of anxiety and always wondering if what I’ve done is enough. Despite this, in the interview, Mr. Warden’s personality and friendly nature melted all these nerves away, and it truly felt like the entire team was rooting for my success. For that, I am eternally grateful to both Mr. Warden and his team for granting me the potential to realize my dreams of pursuing a Bachelors of Science of Honors with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Pharmacology at the University of Alberta.

To the future applicants of the LeRoy Warden & Associates Scholarship, especially to those who may be doubting their potential, remember that you are in control of your story. Financial hardship, past struggles, and regrets do not define your future. They shape who you are, they push you to grow, and eventually they become barriers that you run full speed at. Don’t let someone else write your story for you; use your own pen to carve a future that you desire. Don’t let your own anxiety tell you that your dreams are impossible because you never know the potential you have until you keep persevering in the face of rejection. “High school was a bittersweet journey that tested my limits and shaped my resilience. Pursuing the IB program was a rigorous challenge, filled with sleepless nights and moments of tears. Despite this, I pushed myself to excel academically and took on significant leadership roles. As a leader in EDI initiatives and a dedicated member of the BSA and student senate, I worked to positively impact my school community. These experiences were demanding but rewarding, teaching me perseverance and dedication. Every struggle was worth it, culminating in the honor of receiving this scholarship. I am deeply grateful to Mr. Warden for recognizing my efforts and giving me this incredible opportunity. Thank you for believing in me.

I am thrilled to attend the University of Alberta for Honors Nutrition, a step closer to fulfilling my passion of going to medical school and working as a doctor in the healthcare industry. "Thank you to Mr. Leroy Warden and his team for this fantastic opportunity. This scholarship has allowed me to pursue my passion and made my dream of studying Computer Engineering at NAIT come true. Initially, I hesitated to apply, as I felt underqualified for such a generous scholarship, but I'm glad I did. As I head into the next phase of my academic career, I am excited to take every opportunity and not doubt my capabilities. I want to help other students break down the barriers to their education and make it a right, not a privilege, to attend post-secondary.

“Words cannot express both the privilege I have accepting this award, and the honour I have being the chosen recipient amongst countless other names. Leroy Warden is a truly inspirational figure to me for giving back such a generous charity to the community. This scholarship will be a vital aid in the barriers that university will surely provide. As I navigate my young adult life in the coming years at the University of Alberta, I understand the focus and dedication it will take to get by. I am only greatly appreciative of the support offered by this scholarship as it is like a weight lifted off my shoulders. Oftentimes, students view scholarships for their monetary value alone and tend to look past other opportunities that can arise from them. Being this year's Leroy Warden scholar, I am most excited to start lifelong connections with not only Leroy and his team, but with the past scholars as well. I am overwhelmed by the kindness and care that Mr. Warden and the Edmonton Public School board have shown me. I am gracious to receive a scholarship that celebrates my dedication to my community over the years. I hope through my future career I can give back all the kindness I’ve received.

To the future applicants of this scholarship I share one piece of advice: always follow your dreams no matter how big or small. Throughout your journey, there will be times when you may doubt your capabilities. During these difficult times, I encourage you to leap toward goals that seem unachievable. You may surprise yourself with what you can accomplish. Betting on yourself will lead you closer to your dreams and aspirations. Although it may not always seem like you are up for the challenge, you must believe in yourself. Trust that your dedication and hard work are valuable. Continue to strive for your dreams. If you happen to fail, pick yourself up and try again! Failure is just a lesson that helps you find success. To keep yourself motivated, be surrounded by loved ones that cheer you on. I never imagined that I would be granted the LeRoy Warden Scholarship and even considered not submitting my application. “I am beyond grateful to be the recipient of the 2021 LeRoy Warden & Associates Scholarship. I am excited to soon attend the University of Alberta as a physiology student, and I am eager to continue to pursue my dream of working in research or healthcare.

I advise you to apply for the LeRoy Warden & Associates Scholarship, and to express your genuine self throughout the process. I advise future applicants to surround yourself with people who will continue to motivate you to pursue your goals and dreams, and who will celebrate your efforts and accomplishments. During the application process, I often found myself feeling anxious and doubting my capabilities, but I was able to ground myself by seeking support from my incredible family, friends, and mentors. Through them, I was able to remind myself to take a step back and to be grateful for the help I’ve received, and to be proud of my progress in spite of many setbacks and challenges. "I am still in awe of the generosity Mr. Warden has shown me. Although I have had to work hard for everything in my life, I am so grateful for every hurdle and learning experience I have encountered along the way. This scholarship has made my dream of attending the Nursing Program at MacEwan University a reality, and I am eager to become a Nurse Practitioner. Attending MacEwan without the financial burden of starting my life with thousands of dollars of debt is making a lasting impact on my life. My genuine intent in life is to pay forward the kindness of the countless people, like Mr. Warden, who have helped me reach where I am today. In becoming a Nurse Practitioner, my greatest wish is to positively support my community and commit my life to making a difference. I will never forget the kindness and wisdom LeRoy Warden has extended to me, and I am eager to begin this next chapter of my life.

Here is my advice to the future applicants of the LeRoy Warden & Associates Scholarship. The more you believe in yourself, the closer you are to reaching your goals. So, study a little harder, write down your biggest dreams and aspirations, and give your best effort at all times. Acknowledge what you desire from life, and recognize what you need to do to make that happen. For some, life consists of many seemingly insurmountable mountains. Don’t let this stop you from putting in the work and to find another way. Be creative. Think outside the box. Learn to climb, hike and persevere the journey up the mountain--you can do this! Become grateful for the lessons that various life experiences you collect along the way, and see how strong and capable they make you. At the peak of the mountain, you’ll be able to stand proud upon all the hard work and determination of so many years. The view will be incredible and you will realize that you are more than capable of anything you set your mind to. At the end of the day, always remember to believe in yourself.

I never could have imagined I would be the recipient of this year’s LeRoy Warden & Associates Scholarship, and yet it happened. Throughout the application process, I stayed authentic and vulnerable. "This scholarship represents the kindness humanity has to offer, and in fact dreams are more than just fantasy. Many of you reading this have many goals and aspirations that may seem impossible to others, but you have continued to strive towards your goals. The barriers I have faced of being the ridicule of those who presume my dreams impossible or unrealistic, and have been continuously asked about my financial situation. The barrier of financial support is something that stands in my way, but that does not discourage me from the dream I have wanted to achieve so badly for so long. The kindness of this world is what the scholarship means to me, because not only myself, but someone else believes in my aspirations enough to support them to the extent of this generous scholarship."

2020 UPDATE FROM GEORGE:

"This has been pretty hectic in terms of schooling and adjusting to life with this entire pandemic. The first year experience in general is very challenging on its own. The addition of engineering definitely made it a headache, but nonetheless it was a pretty great experience. The late nights studying with friends was strangely stressful and calming at the same time, overall it was something that forced me to grow. I'm glad to hear the progress made on the Youtube channel.

The messages I have for the new recipient are the following:

**Post-secondary will be a tough and heart breaking experience at times but it will have its upsides no matter how small they may seem to failures.

**You must learn from the small failures because they can help avoid the big failures that hurt more.

**Friends are that cushioning blow, make sure the ones you surround yourself with are ones who want to succeed not drag you down.

**Have fun when you get the opportunity, because if you let them slip post-secondary is not enjoyable at all."

“Mr. Leroy Warden’s Scholarship has helped me tremendously for my undergraduate degree. His scholarship covered my whole first year and this was incredible as I did not have to stress about finances and student loans much my first year, which is very important as a student’s first year of university will already be challenging and can be stressful learning the in’s and outs of post secondary education, so not having to worry financially about academics that year is a huge boost to being able to succeed and focus on school! I am very grateful for his generosity and help to me and the community, and it inspires me to want to use my education to also help my community and stay engaged with it. Anyone who is eligible should apply for his scholarship as it’s a wonderful and life changing opportunity for students entering university. It’s also great to engage with your community and contribute in some way, as it makes one feel like they’re truly having an impact and are a part of something bigger than themselves.
