Meeting Your Neighbours

Here’s some helpful tips on how to meet your neighbours….

Take a walk

Take a walk around the neighbourhood. Smile, say hello and strike up a conversation. Introduce yourself to anyone you pass by on a walk, in the condo building hallways or common areas, at the mailbox. Don’t be shy!

Spend time in the front yard

Garden in the front yard or sit on the front porch or front steps. You'll be surprised how easy it is to meet people when they approach you first. Make sure you spend time outside after work hours or on weekends.

Garage sales

If you have a garage sale, you can rid yourself of all the extra items you don’t want in your new house AND meet the local neighbours who come check out what you have for sale. Make sure to stop in at your neighbourhood garage sales too.

Volunteer

Volunteer at your kid’s school to meet the other parents or volunteer at a local charity.

Use the kids and the dog

Take the kids to the local parks and playgrounds to play. Take the dog for a walk around the block or to the dog park and ensure to interact with others.

Deliver baked goods

Walk over to your next door neighbour’s houses and deliver baked goods, possibly with a little note to introduce yourself.

Use social media and the paper

Find and join on-line social media neighbourhood groups and local clubs. Connect with neighbours on social media. Read the newspaper to keep informed on local events and gatherings.

Go places

Visit the local library, join in a program or drop into the local rec centre or community club, or become a regular at a local coffee shop.

Host a party

Host a block party, porch party or garage party. Go knock door to door or drop invitations into neighbour’s mailboxes and invite them. Ask them to bring chairs or snacks.
